Rabies Control and Prevention

New River Health District investigates all reported animal bites involving humans and a mammal, including domestic animals, exposed to a possible rabid wild animal.

If you have been bitten by an animal and suspect that you have been exposed to rabies:

- Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water to lessen the chance of infection. Seek appropriate medical attention for wound care.

- Attempt to contain the animal. DO NOT PICK IT UP. Contact law enforcement or animal control to come get it.

- Report your bite to the New River Health District: (540) 585-3300

Food and General Environmental Sanitation

The Environmental Health Department conducts inspections of food service establishments, campgrounds, summer camps, migrant labor camps, marinas, and tourist lodging establishments.

Wells and Septic Systems
